Bernat Wines

The Bernat Winessip, taste, and experience

Our estate wines-- Syrah, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Nebbiolo-- are made from our four acre CCOF certified organic Bernat vineyard adjacent to our Cafe Farm. Our wines are crafted using old world methods of wine making which bring out the distinctive qualities of each varietal allowing the wines to express themselves in their most natural way. Attention to detail starts in the vineyard and is expressed in your glass.

2010 Eloquent

91 Points Wine Enthusiast
Bronze San Francisco Chronicle

Our 2010 ‘Eloquent’ Syrah is 100% Beaucastel Clone, this vintage marks the last Bernat Estate Syrah containing this particular French clone. The vines that carried the Beaucastel Syrah have since been grafted over to our yet to be released Estate Cabernet Sauvignon! Aromas of smoke, pepper, red clay, black berry pie and stewed cherries dominate the nose. The palate effuses a smoked beef-jerky characteristic that has become synonymous with Syrahs from the Rhone Valley of France. Black cherry, blueberry, and bramble fruits harmonize with resolute tannins and a slate driven earth quality. Though the hue is slightly softer than its ‘Intrigue’ counterpart, ‘Eloquent’ is still a bold, masculine red wine.

2010 Intrigue

90 Points Wine Enthusiast
Double Gold San Francisco Chronicle

Historically, our Beaucastel and Shiraz clones have undergone fermentation and barrel aging separately, and are then blended for bottling. The 2010 ‘Intrigue’ is the future of Syrah for the Bernat Estate - from this vintage on, all Bernat Estate Syrah wine will be 100% Shiraz clone. Even with the 2010 vintage’s record breaking cool season, this release is powerful with an expressive fruit dominated palate. Exhibiting succulent blue and black fruits integrated with licorice, coriander, and fresh cut tobacco. Structured tannins are present, though they are less overt than the ‘Eloquent’ Syrah. ‘Intrigue’ is certainly the female of the two estate Syrah expressions. It’s soft, curvy edges, lush fruit, and supple tannins result in a quite alluring wine.

2011 Nebbiolo (Sold Out)

Nebbiolo is a challenging grape to farm, there are many factors that are needed from a vintage in order to harness its full potential.  2011 was one such vintage where the ripeness needed was attained – resulting in an incredibly elegant and complex wine with incredible structure.  The color will catch the eye immediately with a brilliant ruby hue gleaming beautifully in the glass.  Aromas of wild cherry, rose petal and soft leather are just of a few of the initial scents the nose uncovers. The structure is classic Nebbiolo with firm tannin balanced by a very present acidity -- an excellent representation of the varietal!  Enjoy this with the Café Lamb Shank and it is sure to be a memorable experience. 2010 Colson Canyon Syrah

The Colson Canyon vineyard is located just beyond the western border of the Santa Maria Valley AVA.  It is a notably cooler climate site than the Bernat 'Estate' Syrahs. The vineyard provides a unique set of flavors and structure.  Classic Syrah notes of deep berry fruit come off in the initial aromatics-- blackberry, blueberry, and cherry. The cooler climate gives this wine a great backbone of acidity, coupled with fine tannins forming a well rounded and approachable structure. It is delicious with our Corsica Pizza and Cafe Roasted Lamb.

2013 Grenache Blanc

The Bernat 2013 Grenache Blanc is a wonderfully aromatic white wine that initially shows a wide variety of fruit tones.  Stone fruit flavors such, as ripe peach and apricot, are mingled with lively citrus notes of orange zest and lemon cream.   A kiss of crushed slate minerality, along with a soft white pepper spice, and a faint presence of lemongrass give this wine excellent layers and complexity.  Grenache Blanc’s inherent richness and spice make it a very versatile wine at the table.  Enjoy this limited production wine with a variety of dishes such as the Nicoise Salad here at the Café as it will compliment the seared tuna beautifully, or try it with herbed pork chops and apples at home.
